Every year on July 16, rural and tribal transit agencies across the country celebrate Rural Transit Day, recognizing the vital role public transportation plays in connecting people, strengthening local economies and improving quality of life in rural areas.
At the Blue Bus, Rural Transit Day is more than a date on the calendar. It’s an opportunity to celebrate the people who make public transit possible every day: our riders, our employees and the communities we proudly serve.
Connecting Communities Across Northern New Mexico
Serving more than 10,000 square miles throughout north central New Mexico, the Blue Bus helps connect residents to the places that matter most. Whether it’s getting to work, attending classes, making it to a medical appointment, shopping for groceries or visiting family and friends, public transit helps make everyday life more accessible.
For many rural communities, transportation can be one of the biggest barriers to opportunity. Reliable transit helps bridge that gap by providing safe, dependable and fare-free or affordable transportation that keeps people connected to essential services and one another.
Rider Spotlight
Every ride tells a story. Some riders depend on the Blue Bus every day, while others use the service to explore new communities, attend special events or simply enjoy the freedom of traveling without the expense of driving. No matter the reason, each trip represents an important connection.
One of those stories belongs to Bruce, a daily Blue Bus rider in Española. He relies on public transit to get to medical appointments, run errands and travel around town safely. His experience reflects the reliability, convenience and peace of mind that rural public transportation provides for so many riders across our region.
“I’ve been riding RTD Blue Bus in Española for 2 years and every bus driver has been friendly professional and courteous. There have been so many neighbors, friends and people at my destination asking me how it is to ride RTD Blue Bus, I highly recommend that you give them a try. If you’re afraid of not getting to your destination, work, appointment-etc on time, do it on a day off just so you can see how convenient it is. They have never once got me to my doctor’s appointment late. I wish I would have started riding RTD Blue Bus so much sooner.”
The People Behind the Wheel
While our buses connect communities, it’s our employees who keep those connections moving.
From bus operators who greet riders with a smile each morning to dispatchers coordinating daily service, mechanics maintaining our fleet and customer service staff assisting passengers, every employee plays an important role in delivering reliable transit across our region.
Their commitment, professionalism and dedication ensure thousands of riders can travel safely and confidently each day.
For Fleet Electronics Technician Matt, rural transit is about making sure people in every community have access to the same opportunities and essential services, regardless of where they live.
“We provide essential services. Our rural transit system is providing the same services the big cities are. We make sure rural communities don’t get left out.”
Every department contributes to the rider experience, whether it’s behind the wheel, behind the scenes or on the front lines helping passengers navigate their trip. Customer Service Representative II Angelica sees firsthand how public transit makes a meaningful difference in people’s daily lives.
“Rural transit does a lot. We help people who can’t drive themselves or need help getting to the places they need to go.”
Behind every successful trip is a team working together to provide exceptional service and support for the communities we serve.
Why Rural Transit Matters
Public transportation is about much more than getting from one place to another. It helps people maintain their independence, supports local businesses, reduces transportation barriers and creates stronger, more connected communities.
As our region continues to grow, so does the importance of providing accessible transportation options that meet the needs of residents across north central New Mexico.
Every rider, every employee and every trip helps strengthen the communities we serve. Investing in public transportation is an investment in people, local economies and the future of rural communities.
