How the Blue Bus Stays Fare Free
Did you know the Blue Bus has been fare free for nearly 20 years? That means every trip on our fixed-route to work, school, the doctor or to town costs exactly $0. We keep transit affordable and accessible for north central New Mexico communities so everyone can get to the places that matter.
Why the Blue Bus is Fare Free
We believe public transit should be open and accessible to everyone. By removing fares, we break down barriers for riders and make it easier for people to connect with jobs, healthcare, education, shopping and recreation. A fare-free system means you never have to worry about carrying cash or choosing between a bus ride and another expense. The Blue Bus is here for everyone with no strings attached.
We understand that plans change and utilizing our free fixed-route service might not align with your schedule anymore. That’s where our on-demand ridesharing service MyBlue™ comes in. MyBlue™ rides are available Monday through Friday in five service zones: Espanola, Taos, Edgewood, Pojoaque/Nambe and La Cienega. The best part is it’s only $1.00 per ride! A flexible, cost-effective option for your public transit needs.
Additionally, certified ADA-Paratransit riders always ride free. Whether you ride the Blue Bus or book a MyBlue™ ride, you’ll never pay a penny! Learn more about ADA-Paratransit and how to qualify HERE.

How It’s Possible
How do we keep the buses rolling without fares? Our funding comes from a combination of federal and state grants as well as a small percentage of the gross receipts tax from Los Alamos, Rio Arriba, Santa Fe and Taos Counties. Together, these resources allow us to prioritize fare-free service across our region.
In 2008, voters in the four-county region approved a regional gross receipts tax of one-eighth of one percent. This funding source has been instrumental in expanding and sustaining services. The tax has allowed the Blue Bus to extend its reach and support regional transit systems, including:
-
- Santa Fe Trails: The Blue Bus provides funding for this system, which operates ten fixed routes, two downtown circulator routes, and paratransit services for elderly and disabled individuals.
-
- Atomic City Transit: Serving Los Alamos and White Rock, this network offers seven fixed routes, five school bus routes, and a Dial-A-Ride system.
-
- New Mexico Rail Runner Express: Blue Bus contributes funding to this rail service that connects Albuquerque and Santa Fe.
The Blue Bus funding model demonstrates the power of collaboration and community commitment. By sharing resources and working together, the district ensures that accessible, reliable, and sustainable transit options are available to all.
By combining funding from multiple sources, we ensure that our buses are not only reliable and safe, but also always free to ride.
The Impact on Our Communities
Fare-free transit is about more than saving money, it’s about creating opportunity. Riders use the Blue Bus to get to work, attend school, visit family, enjoy the outdoors and much more. It helps reduce traffic on our roads, lowers carbon emissions and supports local businesses by connecting people to shops, restaurants and events.
Every time you see a Blue Bus on the road, you’re seeing community investment in action.
Looking Ahead
Our commitment to fare-free transit isn’t going anywhere. We’re proud to continue serving the people of north central New Mexico with free, safe and reliable transportation today, tomorrow and for years to come.
